I’m a professional physicist, developing data analysis and acquisition software for use with highly sensitive, superconducting detectors. The transition-edge sensor, for one, has excellent energy resolution, but only if one takes equally excellent care with the readout system and the data analysis approach. We couldn’t accomplish what we do without open-source software.
